  1. JOSHUA 9

When they used human reasoning and logic instead of inquiring of the Lord, they were tricked and made a bad decision.

The enemy became wood cutters and water carriers for the whole community of Israel. But with that came their customs, traditions, religions. They also occupied land that was promised to Israel, an alliance of enemies and a culture opposite of Israels. They compromised.

  2. I find it interesting that the reason they tricked the Israelites was because they feared God and didn't want to die and believed when they heard that God was going to kill all the inhabitants of the promised land. If only Christians had that much faith now.

  3. Joshua 10

There was a lot of killing going on in this chapter! God even helped by throwing large stones from heaven. Vs 13 was interesting. This was the only time God heeded the voice of a man.

    1. That's true Aimee about heeding the voice of a man, hadn't thought of that. The killing was overkill!!! But a little sin can destroy and influence a whole nation. God knew how easily we are persuaded. Sin can always be justified in our minds.

More killing!! They took the land as the Lord spoke though. But did you notice that they left some people in Gaza? Maybe if they had killed them way back then, they wouldn't be shooting missiles at Jerusalem now????

  5. Joshua 12 & 13

These chapters kind of run together. It is a list of the kings they conquered and how the land was split up over tribe. The first part of 13, God told Joshua he was old but there was still a lot of land to conquer. So God will go out and run them off himself. How awesome is that! Joshua was faithful to do as God told him and when he got tired, God took care of it.

    1. Seven years of battle was along time! My commentary said the the land received by the tribe often had to do with the character of the leader. For instance Joseph's godly character - richest land, Judah who offered himself for Benjamin - largest territory, Reuben who slept with father's wife - desert!

It was neat the other spy was 85 years old and still as strong and just as vigorous. He asked for what the Lord promised Him and the Lord gave it to him. You still have dreams at every age. Sometimes the Lord is just waiting for you to ask!

I thought it was neat that Caleb, one of the original spies, received his own portion of land from the Lord in Judah's portion. He gave his daughter to his brother in marriage because he killed the bad guy.

  8. Joshua 16

Pretty much this chapter is about splitting up more land. And again they left some canaanites, but they forced them to do labor.

Ephraim and Mannaseh complained their allotment was too small instead of of driving out their enemies they just wanted more. Maybe this was the first "Entitlement Issue" in the Bible. They never drove them out or cleared the forest.

I can't believe all the enemies that did not drive out completely. Did they not think that would cause a problem? Were they too tired? Did they not care? Did they actually like the other people living there? Were they sick of fighting? Were they complacent and content with a portion of what God promised? So many questions!
